service learning may 28

During our last service learning we searched the web for places to go to get toys and books with an affordable price. We also talked about how we're going to get some more ice cream and water ice for our next sale. That what we did at our last service learning meeting.

of Mice and Men Test

Test: Of mice and Men

Application-

1. What factors would I change if I directed the film? I wouldn’t change anything really but one thing that I would is try to get curly’s wife point across on how lonely she is. You would go crazy if you only could talk to one person and that person is mean. You would be so happy just by talking to anybody you could talk with. They failed to show how desperate she really was, they made her seem like she wanted every man that crossed her path in the film and book. She just wanted to get to know them, talk to them just wanted to be friends.

2. What question’s would I ask of Lennie? I would ask him how do he feel when call him dumb, stupid, and other things like that, does it hurt him. Does it make him angry? I would ask Lennie these types of questions. I would ask George questions to, to see if Lennie’s any kind of burden to him or does Lennie make him happy that hes with him.

3. Could this have happened in today’s world? I think so because if somebody’s mentally challenged and don’t know their strength its possible that somebody can die or get hurt just the way the puppy and Curly’s wife did.

4. Do you know another instance where Lennie have done wrong? Yes Lennie have behaved badly three times in this film. The first was when they had to leave Weed for touching a girls dress. Another is when he killed the puppy. The last is the biggest one because that’s when he killed Curly’s wife, but all of his wrongdoing wasn’t want he planed to do they wasn’t in a bad manner. They were accidents and didn’t know what to do so he panicked and killed the puppy and Curly’s wife.

Analysis-

1. What do you see as other possible outcomes? I see as another outcome to the film and book is that George and Lennie could have run off together again like they did in Weed and find another farm or something to work at.

2. Which events could have happened when George found Curly’s wife? George could have put Curly’s wife next to a horse to make it seem like she was kicked by the horse and broke her neck like that instead of Lennie doing it, it could have been the horse.

3. What are some of the problems of George and Lennie’s relationship? Is that George can’t really have fun because he have to take care of Lennie and make sure he doesn’t get into trouble. It was like having a child you have to give hem your full attention and George didn’t like that idea that much.

4. What were some of the motives behind George killing Lennie himself? He did that because I think that he should do it instead of somebody who doesn’t care or loved him. He figured if he did it, it would be peaceful instead of him dying by some barbarian who didn’t give a damn about him. So he did it.

5. What was the turning point in the game is that Lennie had to get himself into trouble by killing Curly’s wife. If he didn’t do that they could have finally lived peacefully instead of running from town to town. They could save their money up and finally get that farm that they wanted. They can’t do that because Lennie had got into some more trouble and that dream came to an end.

Empire of The Sun

English
-Essay-

Empire of The Sun

During the movie Empire of The Sun, there was a lot of character development especially in the main character Jamie (Jim).

First of all before the War Jim was caring, gentle to the homeless people that he seen. Jim had really felt sorry for them because they were not living the life that he was. But on the other hand Jim was a real “brat” to his Nanny. When it was time for him to go to sleep and his mother told him he can’t have any more food that night, he told the Nanny to make him something to eat, if she didn’t do as he say he was going to tell on her. The way Jim acts comes from him being a spoiled little rich kid that gets what he wants, never starved or lived on the streets always had it good. That’s where Jim’s behavior came from in the beginning of the movie.

During the War Jim had changed a lot for instance Jim was more knowing of things around him.He knew better not to do certain things that would get him killed. But during the war Jim was very dependent on others such as always staying around Baise, or The Victors who shared a room with him which he though of them kind of like his parents. He knew a lot about The War and airplanes, which the Jap’s (Japanese) had. He wanted to fly one so he studied and learned more about them. This is how Jim was while the war was going on. He was dependent on others but also knew how to survive.

After the war Jim was very Independent he took care of himself. Doing thing on his own, not as naive as he used to be. Jim stop believing what everybody told him. Jim became very caring again he made friends with one of the Jap’s (Japanese) air pilots who was the enemy at the time. He was just a much better person. The thing is that Jim is a survivor he survived the war, found his parents and had finally let go of Baise. He let go of Baise because he was no good he kept on feeding Jim lies that he would take him with them when the war was over, but he lied and left without him. Jim had grew up hes not that spoiled little naïve bratty kid any more, he’s an independent young man who survived The War.

This is the character development of Jamie (Jim). He changed a great deal first Jim was a very spoiled brat who didn’t listen to any one. Then he was dependent on others to take care of him. Finally he was a independent young man who survived a very big War.

NHD Reflection

Pro-Life vs. Pro-Choicce
Documentary
Tanaya Burns, Saleema Parker

My NHD topic was about Pro-Life vs. Pro-Choice. I learned alot while doing this like what time period that you can get an abortion to the time you can't. To see the different sides on abortion like Pro-Life they think its wrong and want abortions to be illegal. Pro-Choice who think that its there choice if they want an abortion or not its not up to us to decide if they want to keep the baby or not, they think that abortion should be legal not illegal. Ican look back and say that i have learned alot while doing NHD even if i didn't want to do. Now I have a much better view on abortion (Pro-Life, Pro-Choice).

Working with a partner was alright, fun i guess but i do think working by yoursself is better because you can start when you want to start like you dont have to fill nobody in on what your doing. If you get a bad grade or something your going to try to blame it on the other person but if your by yourself you know its your fault nobody else or you just didn't want to do the work.

The sucesses in our project was that we got in done and i think we got a good grade we didn't get it yet but overall i think we did very good for two people who never done a documentary before. It was fun working with tanaya but sometimes she got on my nerves.

The challenges that we had was that was when we was finished the documentary we was adding something on it and everything got pushed back and the images and voice overs didn't match so we had to do over time on putting everything back in place but we got it done.

I really have nothing to say aboout suggestions for next year because i dont want to do it next year matter of fact i didnt want to do it this year so i dont know what to tell you.

But overall i think that we did good on our NHD project i think we should have an A or a B i dont think we did that bad to deserve a C.

In this chapter, it basically talks about Bigger got a job. He drives for the Dalton’s family. He felt uncomfortable like talking, doing things in front of the white people. He felt uncomfortable walking through the white neighborhood. Mary the daughter of the Dalton’s, and her friend, Jan, wants to make friend with Bigger. The Drunken Girl

The Drunken Girl ------>In this chapter Bigger and Mary went back to Mrs. Dalton house-Mary’s house. Mary was so drunk that she almost passed out. Mary and Bigger started making out in Mary’s room on the bed and Bigger started to here so one coming into the room. Automatically he was scared. He covered her face with a pillow. summary

Chapter Summary

-Chapter one starts on page 3 to page 12

(Summary)

In this Chapter it talks about how the Thomas family live, four people to a one bedroom apartment. How they are poor, how rats be coming out and Bigger kills it, and starts to play in his sisters face with the dead rat and scares her. Bigger mother stays on him about getting a job to help out with the family.

During this Chapter it basically talks about Bigger and his family how they are like dirt poor and they live in an one bedroom apartment, they have rats, yes rats not mice. That’s how bad they got it. Bigger kills the rat and acts like a big kid playing with the dead rat in front of his sisters face it basically killed her half to death. He’s lazy don’t want to get a job to help out his family. So Mrs. Thomas(Bigger’s) mother basically tell him to get a job all the time to help out with the family but he still doesn’t listen.

Bloom Taxonomy

(Native Son)

Knowledge

1. How many kids do Mrs. Thomas (Bigger’s mother) have?

She has three children, two boys and one girl.

Comprehension

2. Who was the key character?

Bigger was the key character because that story is basically about him, it follows Bigger around nobody else.

Application

3. What questions would you ask of Bigger?

The first question that I would ask Bigger is why won’t he get a job to help support his family. The next question would be why do he act so brave and he know he’s not. The last question I would ask is why did he kill Dalton girl.

Analysis

4. How was this book similar to the wire? This is similar to the wire because it has cursing, violence/murder, poverty, the streets everything abut this book is the same way as the wire nothing more nothing less. They both have people getting murdered in them, the use of the "N" word(nigger). They’re both so much a lot there basically the same.

Synthesis

5. What would happen if Bigger didn’t get caught for killing the Dalton girl. He would probably be living his life not running from the cops. He might be trying to get a job to help out his family. We don’t really know what he would be doing but I know it would be better than running from the cops for killing the Dalton girl. What if Bigger didn’t do the crime at all he’d probably be at the pool hall playing a game of pool with his friends.

Evaluation

6.How would you feel if you were in Bigger’s situation? I think I would be scared because Im going to jail for killing the Dalton girl. Now they’re trying to say I raped her, now it’s a sex crime not just a murder now they’re trying to put me away for the rest of my life. Man and this girl is white I defiantly going to get the death penalty for this man my life is so fucked up how did I get in the mess. Damn it I should have tried harder to hide her body, shit I basically cremated her dammmnnn them cops I would have gotten away with it to if they didn’t come over how did they even know it was me shit. How they even know it was her it was only bones. They just want to blame a black man any way them dirty cops. Man I don’t know what I’m going to do I have my whole life in front of me, now I can’t do anything for my family now.

NHD Project

SILENT KILL
BY:
TANAYA BURNS,
SALEEMA PARKER

I chose to do my NHD project on Margaret Sanger and Abortion. My topic is so broad because my group and I want to focus on the overall perspective of abortion. NHD theme for this year is Conflict and Compromise. Abortion is definitely a conflict but it’s also a compromise. A feminist Margaret Sanger was a hero to woman in the 19th century and maybe now in the 21st century. This woman was a heroine; she was a woman that put herself on the line to prevent unwanted pregnancies and to fight for woman rights. As I did further research I found that not only was she a feminist but she was a murdering racist. She was no hero to black America in the 19th century and she is no hero to me now in the 21st century. "We do not want word to go out that we want to exterminate the Negro population." - Margaret Sanger. I was so destruct when I heard this. Margaret Sanger the woman that was responsible for the Planned Parenthood, abortion movement and the woman that was described as vivacious, warm, healing and powerfully driven. What I didn’t know is that she was a mass murder she not only killed literally millions of lives due to abortion and that’s including 1,200 African American children each day.

Roe v. Wade was a famous case it was most important in history in America. The Court ruled that states could restrict abortions only during the final three months of pregnancy, a stage when medical experts says the fetus is capable of “meaningful life” outside the womb. Many people are con-life for abortion and many people are pro-life. So that raises many conflicts. The court compromised stating that states could restrict abortions only during the final three months of pregnancy. Photographic Evidence shows that even during the first 7 weeks that the fetus develops hands. In conclusion, my NHD project is on Margaret Sanger and Abortion and the conflicts that are behind abortion clinic doors. Also how the mothers are coping with abortion and how they were affected. Abortion is a very controversial topic now and probably in the future.

Religion in School

Religion in School

To me I never had an incident in school that was about religion. We don’t really talk about religion like that because there are people in school that’s not religious, so we don’t want to talk about it so we try to make them feel comfortable. I don’t know if religion should be taught in school or not. To me I really don’t care because I know what I believe in and nothing can change that. But on the other hand some people don’ believe that they think that they are trying to change they religion their belief. To me I really don’t know if it should or should not be taught in school or not because some people can take it the wrong way and some won’t it’s according to who is teaching it.

In the case of McCollum v. Board of Education (1948) it talks about how a mother did not like her child being taught religion in school that she had took the school to the Supreme Court. Mrs. McCollum won the case by a 6-1 vote. She took it to heart saying that they are trying to change her child’s belief of religion. Mrs. McCollum thought that religion shouldn’t be taught in school it’s not there place they shouldn’t be trying to tell children about religion and what is right and wrong about it. Some people have their own beliefs and religions so they don’t want other people telling them another. That’s why she went to court in the first place she didn’t want other people telling kids different beliefs about religion that they don’t believe in or don’t even know about. The point why she went to court was that everybody doesn’t believe in the same things, like some people believe that there is more than one god and some believe that there is only one. Some people are Muslims, Christians, and there are many more other religions out here every body don’t believe in the same things. That’s why I think that in some cases that religion shouldn’t be taught in school because other people might not believe in the same religion. So they just shouldn’t teach it at all in schools.
